My car leaks on the drivers side. I took it to the dealer a few months ago and they said that the repair wouldn't be covered by the warranty (good for about another year) because there has been a modification to the vehicle. I bought it used and I haven't made any modifications to it. They claim that there are some extra wires that run along the driver side floorboard that are either for an alarm or stereo system that aren't from the factory. I will pay you $20 to look at this area of your car which would involve removing (pop off and in) the plastic piece on the floor of the driver's seat (near door). Mine is a 2002, so another 2002 would be ideal, but I'll take what i get!
If anyone knows of a website that has a detailed drawing of the wiring, please let me know too.

No need for a house call, you've got the Internet :!: <G>

Call Honda Customer relations, the number's in the owner's manual. Or ask a dealer by phone.

Complain firmly that your warranty is being denied illegaly.

Your warranty is _NOT_ void in this regard _UNLESS_ the modification is causing the leak. Insight door panels have a leak problem and require "modification" to correct the leak. Adding additional wires that run along the floorboard IMO cannot be the cause of a leak.

Denied!

I called Honda Consumer Affairs and told them my story and they "looked into my case" and called me today. They said that they talked to the dealer that I went to and sided with the dealer. They told me exactly what the dealer told me (that there was a modification) and it wouldn't be covered under warranty. The Consumer Affairs person said that I could go to another dealer and see what they say.
There's a used one for sale here at a dealer, so I'm gonna go see if they'll let me look and take a picture at what is below the plate to see if I truly do have an extra wire. Even if the wires are not from the factory, there is NO WAY they are causing the leak. The plate covering the wires is separate and inches away from the door seal.
More tomorrow!

That is pretty sleezy of them, because it isn't even possible that a wire added BELOW where the water leaks into the car could cause a leak ABOVE! Are they trying to say that someone who made the mod (if indeed there is one) messed up the entire panel in the process?

Re: Denied!

So this is a new or different leak than the one for almost a year ago?

Your experience with the dealership isn't too far off from what happens from time to time. However, the same is not true with Honda customer relations (yours is unusual) so either there's something you forgot to tell us or more likely something is being lost in the choice of words.

In any case your next to last option is to arrange an appointment with the Honda DSM when she is at a nearby dealership. She knows Honda's obligation under the warranty and won't "pick" about such a relatively low cost repair if indeed it's a defect in materials or workmanship. Read, you'll get the repair under warranty.

It's fixed!

The second dealer that i took it to said that it was a leak in the door panel (you were right Mr. Bullock).
They even replaced the material under the driver's side since it has been wet for so long. It hasn't rained yet for me to know that it is fixed, but I'm optimistic.
For any of you in Austin, the dealer that didn't fix it was First Texas and the dealer that did fix it was Howdy Honda.
Thanks,
Joanna
