The dash vents in my car have become loose, for lack of a better word. The up/down movement is very free, and shortly after aiming them I find they have "self adjusted" so that they point up. The friction that used to hold them in place is mostly gone. Anyone else experience this and come up with a fix that doesn't include a lot of disassembly?

I had this same problem a few years ago in another car that I had, what I did was place a piece of paper that had been folded several times and stick it in the bottom of the vent. If you stick it in between the air vent and the dash it should keep it in place. It might be hard with vents in the insight but should work, or at least worth a try!

I've thought about the "stick something in there to cause some friction" plan, but the way they work in the Insight I haven't been able to figure out how it can be done. One thing I have been thinking about is trying to get some blue loctite (the kind that doesn't get totally hard) to soak into the pivot areas. My guess is though that if I can get that to work, it'll only be temporary.

Does anyone know what gives them their stiffness when they're new? Are there rubber o-rings in there or something that wear or harden and loose their friction?

Haha reviving AGAIN - it's crazy hot where I live and this actually is a big problem! Can I transplant some from another car or something?
