Hey Folks,

I have a 2010 Honda Insight with appx. 65,000 miles on it. I like the car overall, but am fairly certain that it has lost a bit of "punch" when accelerating. If I floor the gas pedal, for example, it takes up to 5 seconds for the engine to really rev-up. This happens when driving on flat road, but is particularly bad when going uphill.

I replaced the engine air intake filter with a K&N years ago, and recently cleaned it with a K&N filter cleaning kit, thinking that air intake might be one of the problems. Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick.

Does anyone have any ideas what I might look into? I'm not of a DIY'er when it comes to automobiles, so if it's more involved than changing air filters or windshield wiper pumps, I'd probably bring it to my local dealer, but don't want to bring it in for an open-ended "tune-up" and possibly get sunk with a huge bill.

My questions:
How many CVT fluid changes have you had?
Have you had any of the software updates?
Do you use TopTier fuel? Do you live in a place that changes fuel formulas for summer/winter? That could account for the difference in how acceleration feels.

There really is not a "tune up" in any modern vehicle. Our Insights only require a spark plug change at about 110,000 miles. Many here have removed the plugs ( there are 8 of them) and found them looking brand new.

I might consider putting in a factory air filter just to see if the K&N is too restrictive. Also, there is a cabin filter you can change, it is located behind the glove box.

1. So far, one at 42,000. Even at that time, the fluid was only slightly honey-colored and didn't have a burn smell to it, but I changed it anyway. I'm currently at 65,000 miles, and it seems fine on a paper towel.
2. The last software update I had was recommended by Honda via a letter. It fixed some potential issues with the IMA system.
3. I use "regular" 87-octane gasoline. I could always try filling up at another station to see if it helps, as I usually go to the same one. I live in CA, so they do change the fuel blend in the winter/summer.

Thanks for the tip about the spark plugs.

Well, the fuel formula change usually just effects mileage (it will go down)
Have you driven some other vehicle recently? That can really make the Insight seem like a dog. The CVT always reminds me of a rubber band because it does not shift. Sometimes it seems like it is accelerating slow, but then if you look at the speedo you find that you have reached the speed you wanted even though it didn't feel like it.
The 87 octane should be fine, but it might be worth a try using a different brand. Just to see.

My car was like that for 3 weeks, then boom I got a misfire code, egr, pcv, etc. The spark plugs were black. When I broke the intake loose I smelled gas and saw chocolate syrup like running down from the manifold on the engine. It was full of oil from the breather tube.

Ive also found the injectors to be in rough shape. Ive spent the past few weeks when I can cleaning all the oil out, replacing plugs, injectors. cleaning egr, pcv and installing 2 catch cans to catch this stuff.

Im going to do a compression test to see where I sit and going to heavier oil til I can replace/rebuild engine. Just got done adjusting the valves a few days ago.
