So I unscrewed the drain plug a little while ago and drained my oil. When I went to wipe off the dirt on the plug, I snagged on this helix of wire wrapped around the bottom of the threading on the plug. Most of it broke off. I honestly have no idea what the wire was. Well, now when I screw the plug back in, it rotates indefinitely without ever tightening.

Was that helix of wire something important my naive-self didn't recognize? Or is that completely unrelated and I've stripped the threading in the oil pan? Either way, my car is dead in the water. Anyone's assitance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, that "wire" would be the magnesium threads of the pan still in the threads of the plug. If this happened to me I would be looking for a Helicoil insert. If done properly the result would be stronger than the original, and cheaper than replacing the pan.
