I looked and looked and looked, but I couldn't find a thread with this subject. I'm trying to compile a list of Insight owners with the total miles on their Insights. This is in regards to the debunked car study saying that the Insight and Prius cost more "from dust to dust" than a Hummer H3. I was trying to compile a list with current miles on the Insights.

As for me, my 2000 has 94,000 miles.

2000, about 95K miles, 70+ LMPG since purchase (used, at 50K).

Total repairs, other than oil & filter changes:

New 12-volt battery, about $50.
2 front tires replaced due to wear
1 tire replaced due to road hazard damage -one of the new ones,
too, damnit, and just a few weeks after they were installed.
New windshield wipers
A couple of small cracks in plastic trim parts, repaired with ABS
pipe cement.

So figuring against a Hummer:
Insight Hummer
Cost used $10,000 $25,000 (Ballpark figures from eBay)
Gas @ $2.50 $1,335 $6,665
Tires 165 260? (probably more!)
Battery 50 75
Total $11,550 $32,000

Add in the higher cost of registration & insurance for a Hummer, and it seems the Insight has cost me about 1/3 what I would have paid for a Hummer in the same time. In addition to this, a lot of my driving is business-related, and so deductable at the standard rate (45 cents/mile?), even though it doesn't cost me anywhere near that to drive the Insight.

If this friend of yours really believes that a Hummer costs less, could you introduce us? I have a lot of mining stock to unload - and then there's this bridge in Brooklyn that he might want to look at...

Hi Jimmy,

I have purchased 3 Insights new:

2002: 77,000 miles (sold)
2003: 33,000 miles (sold)
2005 23,000 miles (current)

All have run perfectly; never an engine miss, recal, flat tire, or malfunction of any kind.

I kept buying new ones, because I kept hearing rumors of discontinuing production, and I wanted to end up with a late example.....

well

2001 w/105k
have been driving W/O IMA for about 15k now with no issues.

Bottom line: pretty much ANY Honda will outrun ANY car "dust to dust".

2002 with 75,000 miles. Had the battery control modules replaced under warrantee around 60000 miles. New tires. Nothing else wrong, other than a parking light bulb that just went out.

2002, about to hit 163,000 miles, and still getting 75 to 77 mpg on my 60 mile drive to work.

Had the cat converter replaced for under $1200. Other than that, just normal maintanence. It's holding up quite well considering the four deer I've hit.

Mine

2001 with 180k miles
Battery pack and modules replaced at 157k (free)
new cat recently ($900 at dealer)

just got it back from the body shop with about $4k or work done. Replaced driver side door and left front fender. Covered by insurance. Glad they didn't total it because of HOV stickers (California)

See my post from January regarding accident. Search for "t-boned"

Over 200,000miles

There is someone in G-boro, NC who has more than 200,000 on his Insight. I think he holds the record. There is a thread where he talks about his Insight, but I don't know how to find it. I think it is titled something like "most miles on an Insight."

That aritcle drives me nuts  I have responded to it on an unrelated forum and at work, where someone saw fit to post it on a bulletin board. I won't bother here, because I would be just preaching to the choir. As for my little silver gem, I have the following:

2004
94,000 miles
original brakes
oil pan replaced (warranty)
No other work necessary
76.1 LMPG

I really don't think my car is 6K miles from its immenent demise.

I'm afraid I'm not much help. I have only 28,757 on my silver '03 and with my roof rack, my mileage is only 43mpg or thereabouts.

The only problem I had out of normal maintenance was stinkiness in my vents, which were steam cleaned. The air filter was fine. This isn't counting the bodywork after a Chrysler Town & Country wrapped itself around my car in the "Compacts Only" parking lot. Neither cost me a cent, though.

FWIW, my motorcycle has similar mileage and costs a LOT more than the Insight to maintain.
