Note: I have moved this string of posts into their own thread to avoid flooding the Community Feedback thread.
Bull Dog - InsightCentral Moderator

I'm not sure where to put posts about forum functionality - so I'm putting my question here.

I've revisited a couple older threads I created, yet ones that I still add to, and images that I had uploaded to InsightCentral and posted in the threads are gone. Why is this happening?

What's more, I can't edit those posts any longer -- so I can't re-post the images in their original location. That's really problematic. Both of these things - the disappearing images and not being able to edit old posts - are extremely frustrating and make me want to... spit nails. It takes a long time to make a good thread, post the right images, in the right place, etc. To have them disappear for some unknown reason at some unknown time makes it seem pointless to even try.

Post editing actually something I'm working on offering as a service for other members. Work has been busy recently so I haven't had the time to fine tune the details yet.

Give me a week or so and I should have something ironed out on that front.

The real solution will be to allow members an unlimited amount of time to edit their posts, but until that happens....

^ Do you know what the technical or other hurdle is to allowing unlimited editing like before?

How about the disappearing images - any ideas?

The time limit is a setting in the XenForo software if this thread is to be believed.
I don't know about the disappearing images.
Hello all,

Are the missing images remotely hosted and are they on HTTPS because that can cause issues if the images are not secure.

You can now host all images on our site now for free: https://www.insightcentral.net/media/

They were/are hosted at IC. That's partly what's so annoying - a few years ago free hosting sites like dropbox and photobucket stopped allowing remote links, so I started uploading to IC and when I got the chance I updated 'missing' images with ones I uploaded to IC. Now a lot of those images are gone. In their place there's a missing image icon and when I copy 'link to image' they all appear to be this: https://www.insightcentral.net/members/eq1.164984/?id=164984

Here's a link to a post with a missing pic, for example: https://www.insightcentral.net/threads/oem-pack-management-efficiency-not-so-good.117785/#post-1363105

^ I'm not sure what exactly gets put into the "media folder." I usually just 'add image' to posts these days - and I'm not sure whether those get lumped into 'my media folder' or not. I used to upload images to 'my gallery' or something like that, and then in a post that needed the image I'd link to the image in the gallery. So, it appears that at least those images I uploaded to 'my gallery' in bygone days are in the media folder... The image in the example link above is indeed in the media folder, and that's one that I had uploaded to the 'gallery'...

Administrative note: I decided to move this string of posts into their own thread to avoid flooding the Community Feedback thread.

I had a look at the HTML source code in the thread you linked eq1, and the link to the image is there, but broken.

It would seem that links from the old "gallery images" to the new media folder haven't been automatically translated.

^ Thanks Bull Dog. One thing I should probably note is that I don't think this happened right away after the forum change. Seems like old images were there just after the change, but some time thereafter they disappeared...

Also, one other thing: I was just looking through 'media added by eq1', and it appears that all the images in there are what I had posted a while ago, in 'my gallery' or whatever. So, I was thinking that maybe any image I add, such as inserted into a post, would be lumped into 'media added by eq1', but that appears not to be the case. I inserted an image yesterday into a new post, for example, and I don't see it in the media folder...

Eq1 can correct me if I'm wrong. These are images that are hosted on InsightCentral but at some point the links to them became broken.

For example, in eq1's thread "OEM pack management efficiency: Not so good(?)..." the HTML for the image in his first post in the thread looks like this:

Code:

        <picture>

        </picture>

So we can see that the webpage is trying to load an image with the URL of

"http://www.insightcentral.net/forums/members/164984-eq1-albums-eq-pics-picture8401-pack-mgmt-efficiency-graph.jpg"

but that link is old and broken. In addition, the old "album" feature has been replaced with the "media" feature.

Thusly the new link is, "https://www.insightcentral.net//media/pack-mgmt-efficiency-graph.8401/full"

I noticed that both the old and new URLs for that image have "8401" in the names. This led me to think that perhaps there might be an automated way to fix all such broken links of this nature.

If that is too much trouble or not realistically feasible, I will be happy to work with eq1 to find and update the broken links in his posts.
