This may have been decided long ago but the search function will not process an inquiry less than 3 letters ("HX" for instance). My question is, with all things being equal (same car, driver, commute, etc) would '96-00 Civic HX rims on RE92's be comparable in MPG to stock '00-06 Insight rims on the same RE92 tire?

I ask because I recently purchased an '01 5-speed Insight with 114k on the clock. My old daily is a '97 Civic Hatch with a D16Y5 swap with HX rims. This car must be sold to make room for the Insight. I prefer the look of the HX rims and they are in much better condition than the rashed and peeling Insight rims that have tired RE92's on them. Being that I will need new tires anyway, why not swap wheels now and add style to my new ride? This is solely a MPG question.

You can't use HX rims because I am using them on my car :v. No copycat.

OK seriously though, they are actually extremely close in weight, with the the HX being lighter by about 1/4-1/2lb per rim. I have swapped back and forth and they get the same exact mpg, they just look wayyyyyy better than stock insight rims.

Just remember, you can't use them because I AM USING THEM >:lllll.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If it makes you feel better Balto, mine are anthracite in color and the car is red (faded on top). I'll rep the east coast and you can have the west. No rap feuds.

Anyone else do an ABA test? The tires on the HX are not LRR so I'm exempt for now.

:3. I have done 'ABA' testing. I had a set of RE92'S on stock rims that I swapped onto my HX and installed on my car and my MPG's didn't change whatsoever.

IMO, it is virtually impossible to answer this kind of question with ABA testing, because of the difficulty of controlling the amount of lean burn in your test segments. I've tried testing Moon caps, a similar kind of question.

You can come at this a couple of ways. First, Honda already had the HX wheel in inventory when they designed the Insight wheel. Their engineers must have thought there was a small improvement in the redesign. The Insight MPG performance is made up of many small improvements laid end to end - some improvements being large, so pretty small. The wheel issue is "probably" one of the small ones.

Second, the improvement would come from weight, aero and perhaps offset position. The weight difference is negligible, as already point out. The difference in aero performace will be the only possible improvement and that is probably impossible to measure.

I say, if you like the HX, then use it. Balto already said he couldn't find any difference in testing.

best be careful when covering the wheels for fear of heating issues
Depending on who's driving you'd probably be fine even without any flow through the outside of the wheel. The Insight is a small, light car, so the brakes aren't going to be worked that hard. In addition, the brakes are only engaged after you've tapped out the regenerative braking. A decent driver should be bleeding off a good chunk of their speed through the regen system, and thus not generating a lot of heat at the wheels from the brakes.

$2,800 AlexCA. From the maiden drive home from Richmond she did rather stellar, 67.2 mpg over 250 miles with ECON AC blowing most of the time. My driving habits are fuel conscious but no engine off cruising or kill switches or pulse and glide, just lots of regen. I'm a 'practical' hypermiler who reduces weight or modifies subtle, non apparent aspects (taller gearing, underbelly panels, Ultragauge, in my older Hondas) but likes the look of a near-stock car. Possibly HX wheels, lower it a bit in the future, paint and trim, done.

Correct dSteele713. This car will be driven as intended as a daily commuter and occasional trip car and won't see much hard use in braking. Getting the vinyl to stick to the underside consistently would be a challenge. No brake dust would be a nice perk, although I don't see that becoming a problem anyway.

I put HX wheels on my Insight within the last month or two, they look MUCH better. I can't say much for the fuel economy hit though as I've never had RE92's on my HX wheels, but I'm currently getting about on average 5-6 mpg less with "wrong tires" on HX's.

HX rims are a hair heavier than the factory rims.

For what it's worth, I have a set up for trade in the For Sale section. I'd like to get another set of OEM Insight rims in trade, for my winter tires.

Update:

Last year, brand new Nokian winter tires on stock rims, 59-62mpg (3 tanks)
This year, 1 year old Nokian winter tires on HX rims, 66-71mpg (3 tanks)

Subjectively it "felt" like I was doing much worse than last year, but the fuel logs don't like and winters always take me by surprise. It just sucks to lose 15-20mpg when compared with my summer tanks, and I know it's going to get worse as it continues to get colder.

The HX rims are 0.75-1.00lbs heavier than stock and less aerodynamic. Tires lose rolling resistance as they break in, so that's almost certainly a contributing factor to my economy being better this winter, plus this past summer I set a few personal record tanks so my driving style is probably a bit different.
