I just bought a 2002 Midnight Blue Insight: 56K mi, very well cared for. It's quickly becoming my favorite car of all time.

I drive 80 miles round trip to work every weekday and based on assumed average MPG of "only" 56, this car is going to save $120/month in gas and another $60/month in tolls (it came with HOV stickers) compared to the Acura RSX that I used to drive. $180 per month is not chump change! And the insurance savings are going to add significantly to that. Why isn't everyone who commutes to work driving one of these 4-wheeled wonders??

BTW, in the first week of commuting I'm getting between 62-65 MPG on the trip, depending on traffic conditions. My near-term goal is to break 70 MPG for one of the 40-mile trips.

It's great to find such a well-run discussion group on the net to turn to with questions and I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about this great car.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom and welcome to the forums :!: :)

May I recommend scanning the MPG forums for any maximum MPG tips and tricks that you might want to begin to include in your driving style :?:

Not only is the Insight very fuel miserly its fun to drive too :!:

And I look forward to reading about your ownership experiences as you post them here. :)

You will have to keep us up to date on your savings. At 180 dollars a month you will have saved 21,600 dollars in ten years.

I too have no idea why people did not buy these cars on mass for commuting.

Quite aside from the savings, this is my all time favorite car as well. It definitely has a real personality, something that is lacking these days in many common cars. :D

The few times you go to the gas pump ... try not to laugh or snicker too loudly at the SUV and other such owners who might be there, cursing as they "feed" their gas hogs ... those people can turn nasty! :)

Oh, and by the way, best of luck with the "new" car and welcome to "the club"!

Savings from bridge tolls

Congrats on your new insight. I see you got one with the HOV stickers, that's a good move. I wonder if you need to get a "hybrid" fastrak transponder? When they were still giving out stickers you were supposed to get that too.

See http://www.bayareafastrak.org for info. If you have a hybrid transponder then toll is collected in car pool lanes too. Unless you really have two people in the car, in which case you put the transponder in the mylar bag and there is not toll charged.

Welcome to the group.

Don't be away as long as I have been.

You will find that the Insight is not only your favorite car of all time, but that it is also the best car of all time (until the Insight 2 mystery bicycle car 160 mpg replacement).
