I have a 2010 Insight and suddenly this winter, a weird loud noise started coming from the engine. The car has over 225000 km and bought it used since 2016 and only had to change oil on it so far and that is it.

A mechanic heard the noise and said that it looks like it is coming from the drive belt area and said he would have to do an inspection to see if it is the belt that needs to be replaced or one of the pulleys that the belt is going around.

Does anyone know how many pulleys the drive belt is going around and how much can it cost on average to replace a driving belt or one of these pulleys? And should I be bringing this to a hybrid specialist mechanic or can a general mechanic handle this fine? I am trying to avoid going to Honda as it would most likely be too expensive for me.

At the same time I bring this car in at the mechanic, I will ask him to also do a general inspection like the suspension, brakes, fluid levels, battery, etc.. I asked him if he can flush and change my transmission fluid as the car slightly shakes when weather is very cold but he recommended that this might create more problems and said to leave as is for the sake of the transmission.

Any other things I should check out at the same time at the mechanic?

Change the fan belt and tranny fluid ... the pulley noise is common in the cold weather so long as its not really atrocious...my car does it too sometimes

I'm a G1 guy, but your mechanic is DEAD WRONG about the CVT fluid. This should be changed about every 30K miles, so it sounds like you're WAY overdue. Use ONLY Honda CVT fluid.

For those playing at home in the US, that's 136,700 miles.

That belt has no set change interval, it is just an inspect along with other items to be inspected when the MID sets codes. That said, the change interval before there was a MID was 105,000 miles (168,981 km) So I would say you were overdue. Just changing the belt may be enough. The mechanic may find a sprocket, idler, or tensioner that needs to be replaced in the process.

The CVT fluid does indeed have a 30k change interval (48, 280 km) There is no flush. There is a drain plug (use a fresh crush washer and torque to 49(N.m)36 ft lbs) and a fill hole on top. There is a myth that could have some truth with respect to typical automatics about not changing the fluid if it has never been done. That does not apply to any Honda automatic, especially the CVT. In fact, the CVT designer thought the fluid should be changed even more often, like every 16-18k miles. in other words, every other oil change is not too much.

Genuine Honda CVT fluid only!

What is the fan belt? Do you mean the drive belt?

How about the transmission filters, there are two of them, heard one is easier to change than the other. It looks like the transmission fluid was never ever changed on the car and that is why the mechanic said it might create more harm than good but he took a look at the dipstick this morning and said that the fluid he saw looked pretty clean. He recommended a transmission fluid drainage/change and not a flush.
