A friend of mine noticed an oil leak that I had left on his
driveway over the weekend coming from the left side of my engine.
I left the car at the dealership yesterday morning, and received a call
explaining the problem.
They claim that during manufacture, one of the gaskets was installed
backwards which resulted in the leak.
Luckly, I didn't loose enough oil to cause damage, but it certainly makes
me think that an extended warranty may not be a waste of money.
It really sucks that at 3,500 miles my car is stuck at the dealership waiting
for this gasket to be shipped in, and I have to drive a suzuki aerio rental car!
I'm just now realizing that *shock* I have a real attatchment to this car!

Please go a little further on your malfunction. Which vehicle, Insight? Civic? etc. Also please identify which gasket was leaking. TKS. Willie

I have a 2003 Insight (# listed in my signature)
I'm not sure of which gasket yet, cause the service
writer didn't go into those kind of details on the phone.
When I get the car back, I'll provide those details.

:(
Just got the call, letting me know that they will need it at the very
least one more day.
I asked for more details of the problem, and he wasn't all that sure
without contacting the mechanic working on the car.
Here's what he knew:
Oil pan had to be removed
leak was on the right side of the motor (and collecting on the plastic cover under the engine)
The gasket in question is a 2 segment gasket, the second of which they
haven't received yet.

He did inform me that the oil change would be done at no charge, and that they are going to pick up the rental fee.

I didn't get much info from the dealership on the nature of my problem,
but I have the invoice in front of me.
Here are the parts they used to repair this oil leak:
FP - Number Description
6340830 Gasket A, 11251-PHM
6340848 Gasket B, 11252-PHM
6361513 Oil 08798-902
0171876 Washer 1 94109-1400

I was told that the labor would have been over $300 had the car not
been under warranty.
They paid for my car rental (3 days), and tried charging me for the oil
change after telling me a few days earlier that there would be no charge due to the fact that the oil pan had to be removed for the repair.
I did pay for the filter, which came to 8.25 including tax.
At 3,800 miles I'm a little dissapointed with having to go through this, but that's how things seem to go.
With this many miles on my last new car (2001 Chevy Malibu, same dealership) they had already replaced the steering rack and both front struts towers, so I probably shouldn't complain.
