I have a 2000 Insight with about 100k miles on it. The 90k service was performed a few months ago. A few days ago my CIL came on, so i took it in to my dealer. They said that the cat was bad/used up (understandable at 100k miles) and has to be replaced.
They quoted me $1,300 for the new cat and $300 instalation!? $1,600 dollars for a new cat!? Come on... I bought the card used for $6000.
I was wondering, first, if anyone else knows if this is the normal cost for a cat for an Insight? It seems WAY high considering a new cat for a Chevy is $100. And secondly, is there any reason I couldn't buy a $80 Cat from SummitRacing and weld it in place myself? Maintaining, of course, both O2 sensors.
Thanks.
