My thought is to find some appropriately sized snap-in plastic buttons

The Porsche Boxster has a similar problem with front licence plate holes. There is a plastic button that pops right into the hole and you can paint it to match or maybe they are already color matched.

On one of my current vehicles, I found some cheap plastic plugs at the parts store, prepped and painted them body color, with clearcoat and popped them in. Used a little silicone to keep them in place. They look kind of cool:
