Yeah, I fear that at 50 lbs. a blowout might make you roll over like an Explorer! At some point you might as well ride around on the rims.
With more pressure, I believe the center of the tire wears first.
I use a gauge I bought from Motorsport Auto. It has a round dial and a bleed--off valve so you can over-inflate a little and then bleed off some with the gauge for a perfect result.
I've seen them elsewhere--at Brookstone, but also at some parts stores, I think. It is analog, not digital.
