I'm looking to replace my car's stereo, and I have the following list of features I want.

Must haves:
Have an amber display
Will read CD's, CD-R's and CD-RW's
Will play MP3/WMA's
Good anti-skip (buffer or suspension)

Extra points added for:
Bluetooth compatible
USB port for thumb drives
Removable faceplate

I emailed this list to Crutchfield, and they recommended this unit:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-JMp2cVKsPb ... =020DXZ775

Looks pretty good to me except I was hoping to keep the price around 200 bucks. If I include the bluetooth adapter, this one is a bit over 400. Any comments regarding this unit? Any other recommendations that fit my requirements?

Also, Crutchfield says installing any stereo (not just this one) requires modification to the vehicle. Any idea how extensive this is? I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I'm not worried, just like to know what I'm getting myself into before I'm in the thick of it.

Removing the console is likely the most difficult part.

Re OEM reciever has a Honda specific plug at the back. You will have to do some detective work with the wires. You do have a multi-meter, wire strippers, soldering iron or crimping tool??

I got an Alpine that does most of those things. I bought it from Crutchfield. I lied and told them I had an early 2000's Civic (figuring that's when the Insight's wiring was designed), and they sent me an adapter plug with the color coding, so no voltmeter needed. They also sent me a mounting kit which I did not need. I simply took two plates off the sides of the old head unit and put them on the sides of the Alpine (the holes lined up perfectly) and slapped it right into my 2006 Insight. Taking apart the dash was a snap too. Easiest install I ever did!

The irony is that now I'm so busy driving the beast that I rarely listen to the sound system that I just HAD to have...[/i]

I'm still deliriously happy with this:

Definitely in your price range... and it has eight display colors to choose from! Yes, changing from FM to AM is a minor pain, but other than that, I'm quite happy with it, and the design even (kinda) matches the swoops of our deash (as commented by one of my passengers)... :D

Buy a Honda / Accura harness adapter .... $18.00. DO NOT cut your harness.

Exactly. Wire the receiver leads to the adapter plug, then plug the adapter into the Honda-specific plug in the Insight. This way you maintain the factory harness, and you can do the soldering in a comfortable place, not squinched up in the car.

Thanks guys for all the good comments. Sounds like installation won't be much trouble, and yes I have all the necessary tools. I wouldn't think of cutting into the harness. I could, but why when adapters are available.

That Parrot unit looks really interesting! I like pretty much everything I've read about it except the AM/FM switching (I listen to both) and I wish it had a clock. But, for nearly half the price and great comments I've seen regarding the bluetooth clarity, I think that's my new target. Thanks boogety for the recommendation, and for documenting it like you did in the forum.

My original choice would have been fine probably, but it cost more than I was comfortable spending.

I have an alpine. removable face plate. I have my ipod and sirius all hooked up to it and controlled thru the stereo itself, not a seperate entity. Not sure about bluetooth stuff, i do not ever talk on my phone.

Parrot RK-8200

This unit looks pretty interesting. I had planned to get the Rhythm 'n Blue, but was still delaying because as odd as it might sound, I know I'd miss the display not showing a clock. Now I'm seeing Parrot is about to start selling this new unit, which looks to be a winner for the Insight, except I still can't verify whether or not IT has a clock.

Regardless, I thought you guys might like this unit.

Here's what I'm getting shortly after Christmas. http://reviews.cnet.com/in-dash-car-ste ... 78977.html
It has built in Bluetooth, sub controls, and USB input. I plan on hooking up a portable hard drive for mp3 music. I will have to buy an AUX adapter that plugs into the cd changer output so I can plug in my XM radio.

You can find these on ebay for about $220.00.

Hope this helps.

That Parrot unit looks like almost the perfect headunit. If I wasn't considering running an in dash GPS unit and running two cameras for the side mirrors, feeding those to the screen... I'd be all over this. Although my camera dreams might not happen, in which case I'll be getting this.

Oh, this is so last year, devin1955... ;)

I remember some discussion about most video-capable stereos being unsuitable for our Insights because of the screen deploying upwards...

So, I'm playing on eBay, and, voilá!

http://cgi.ebay.com/IN432BTS-Touch-Scre ... dZViewItem

It doesn't say it's a DIN size, but it looks like it from the little video and the picture... but I don't know of any other screen that deploys down... maybe this will help someone out... I don't know beans about this thing except that it exists, this is not an endorsement, only a heads up...
