My '00 has 68k on it , and just recently my check engine light came on. When I got gas the next day, I noticed the gas cap was not screwed on tight at all. This is probably the source of the problem. Is there a way I can reset the light? I bet 2:1 if I take it to the Honda dealer they'll want to replace the O2 sensor, or at least charge me $75 to run diagostics.

When that happened to me a few years ago with my wife's CR-V, I just
disconnected the battery for a couple minutes and reconnected it. Of course
then you have to reprogram your radio presets and such, but it worked for
me.

The loose gas cap code will self clear the MIL after 2 standard drive cycles (basically a normal commute with overnight "rests".

Its an OBDII thing. The parameters for self clearing some codes were defined for simulation on a chassis dynamometer. Too many variables to try and "drive" by. So don't be alarmed if it takes a couple more days. Simply stated short trips without a several hours long rest in between won't count as a drive cycle for self clearing this code.

However internally the code will still be stored. I'd simply leave it in. Just remember that if the MIL occurs again and you have it diagnosed that there will be a preexisting loose gas cap code.

HTH! :)
