So here’s what I’m thinking. Monte’s pack is good, but Mickey’s isn’t. It will be a while before I can get a replacement engine into Monte and Monte’s pack is just going to degrade from lack of use. To me, it makes sense to swap Monte’s pack into Mickey.

My favorite. Swapping packs.

That’s what I would do.

Well, I love an Insight with a good battery. A weak one not so much. A bypassed IMA, never.

I can’t swing the bypass here in NJ since I have to get the car inspected. I can stand driving an IMA-disabled CVT, but not manual. Plus, I rely too much on regen coasting for braking action, so I really need a good pack.

“It’s alive!” (In my best Boris Karloff voice). IMA-less 45 mile jaunt to work this a.m. returned 47.4 mpg. I was hoping for better.

Bonus points if you name the movie without Googling it.

Old Frankenstein was the answer I was looking for. Karloff was the tipoff.

Sean has just confirmed that he is under 50 by his last answer, although the line in Young Frankenstein was an homage to the Old Frankenstein line, undoubtedly.

Hah! I'm over 50 and the first thought I had was of "Young Frankenstein"! Mel Brooks - what gloriously politically incorrect movies!!!

Young Frankenstein
Nah... Saturday Night Fever... Tony Manero's uncle was played by Boris Karloff.
And... Boris never said "It's alive." - that was what'shisname Clive.

Latest update: IMA codes 1600 and 1644. I was expecting typical battery module deterioration codes, so there may be hope for this pack yet.

Of course, electrical troubleshooting is the weakest part of my wrenching game.

Forgot to mention in the interim, my 1644 went away to be replaced by a 1438 (if memory serves). Scott suggested a bad MDM (contained within the dc-dc converter.)

Thus, I replaced the dc-dc converter with a good used unit that I had scavenged from a wreck in Pa. two years ago. IMA function restored. No IMA light, no codes, no CEL. Recharge, assist and autostop all functioning as normal.

I’m chalking this one up as a win, but replacement was a tedious, time-consuming procedure in a tight space. Luckily, I am small enough to stand in the spare tire well and the dc-dc converter isn’t nearly as heavy as a high voltage pack.
