Using a cut down OBDIIC&C with 18F26K80 pic running at 64mhz to drive 256 series linked WS2812B RGB Leds using a fast pwm signal.

The leds are in a snakes and ladders style 16x16 matrix approx 6"x6".

I'm going retro old school to discover the meaning of life by making a Conway 'Life' simulator to fit in a picture frame or similar. Relaxing making a pleasing entertaining gadget for my own amusement after working flat out on LTO stuff for weeks.

Eventually it will have bells and whistles and be configurable via the OBDIIC&C which will display info like number of generations, cells, average, bla bla.

I've ordered 4 of the below 8 x 32 (256) led matrix to build a super 1024 led 'Life' collider. LOL
This should push the pic to it's limits.

This faffing about has been useful as I have learnt the 18F26K80 is a pin for pin replacement for the 18F2680/18F2620/16F886 PIC's we have used in the OBDIIC&C.

It has extra features, including CAN, more RAM, 12bit adc, and it's twice as fast as the other 18F parts (64mhz).

Plus it's about 1/3rd of the price of the old 18F2680 CAN part.. :)

I'm getting the hand of it's configuration quirks so should be able to port proper OBDIIC&C code to it in due course.

Driving 1024 leds with the cut down OBDIIC&C (PIC 18F26K80) at just over 3hz.

Need to work on optimizing the code, adding colour and generally enhancing the experience.

The four 8x32 leds strip are connected in series and fixed on the backboard of this nice neat white deep photo frame using double sided adhesive sheet.

The LEDS are a perfect fit in this frame so highly recommended for similar projects.

I ran that simulation for hours back in the 1980s on my mighty AT&T, dual-floppy 8088!

The 18F26K80 PIC sounds pretty cool. With all the extra features and additional speed can it easily replace the current 18F2680 PIC we have in the OBDIIC&C.

Fascinating. Been lots of high powered though applied to this thing over the years. More than anyone ever wanted to know here;

If I read the "rules" correctly, it should go completely dark at some point, maybe years.........
