I would like to know the coolant temperature since the display is useless. It's either two bars when cold or four bars otherwise, no matter what so far. The gauge in my SAABs would move up and down depending on load. Anyway I found this OBD reader:
Hi Frank; I use a Scangauge all the time while driving. The water temp displays constantly. On my 2005 Insight, the temp generally stays @ 196 F. When climbing hills I have watched it go to 204 F, but never any higher.......
If you have an old laptop (or new one for that matter), you can get an OBD II scanner for it. It is customizable and about $130 or so if I remember correctly. I'm glad I got mine. http://www.obd-2.com/

I'd make sure that whatever your choice the tool can also read freeze frame data, a snapshot of many different engine paramaters stored at the time of a code event. If you ever get into a tricky diagnosis it can be very helpful.
Frank,
That EZ link looks like an older one, only two lines of display. Try maybe the Auto X-Ray 4000 http://www.midwayautosupply.com/detailedproductdescription.asp?9199
Bad Bob, I have that same software too, works well.
John, what you have looks like fun.
Billy, I looked at scangauge on the net, what do you think of it. Question, you have an '05, M/T or CVT? What type of readings do you see when you read your # 1 O2 sensor.
I really like my version 1 scangage. They have version 2 now which looks a lot nicer: http://scangage.com/
It's a lot cheaper than the one you found, but I understand from this forum that the scangage doesn't accurately report fuel usage rates/mileage on the Insight (does fine on my Beetle).
I wonder if all OBD units would have the same problem? Seems like they would.
From these I think the Scan Gauge II is the one I’ll get.
Billy, do you leave it mounted and hooked up all the time? This is what I’d like to do. I have and am going to “permanently” mount a Garmin V GPS receiver so I won’t need any of the speed related stuff, but I really would like to have a display with temp and other information.
Uh, just took another look at the scangauge II. Am I seeing things? It looks like it only does live data for about a dozen items. My scan tools do almost 20. And it doesn't read the O2 sensors? If that's true then John's idea looks like the way to go. His also reads the new wide range lambda A/F ratio O2 sensors.
hi Frank; yes, I leave it mounted and hooked up all the time. I let a good friend try it, and he enjoyed it so much he called the toll free number and ordered one too!
Jack, I think the reason for having the O2 sensor information would be to know when the car is in "lean burn". I am more interested in having real time temperature information. Also the ScanGuage looks as if it will be very easy to mount on the Al bracket I plan to use to mount my Garmin V under the radio. If I ever want O2 information I will buy another reader. Also the ScanGuage has a 30 day return policy so if I don't like it, back it goes.
I am waiting for it to arrive before I do anything. My plan is to use a sheet of Al and cut a hole in it for the Scan Gauge and next to that make provisions to mount a Garmin V I have. I plan on attaching it some how under the radio. I think they sould fit pretty well there. This will take me a while to get together, but I'll post a picture when I'm done.
I admit I am extremely lazy when it comes to installs. My stereo only looks ok because its rediculously easy. If some of you purists looked under the hood and saw my normal sized 12v batter shoved in sans-battery tray, it would make you cry
So I'm trying to think of the best place to put this Gage easily
