I've since sold my Insight and went to the dark side. A diesel.

on http://www.tdiclub.com they put the insight into the same groups at other hybrids. So I try and defend the little Insight.

Could you'll post the max speed that you've been in your insight. Or better yet would be a picture. I had my insight up to 110mph.. But didn't take any pics of the speedo.

Re: Top speed? need your help defending the Insight to TD

WB cakley :!: :D

Yup :!: That diesel exhaust can have more black soot. (dark side humor :p )

There was one member here that posted a pic with an slightly highly unbelievable number, and got "caught" with his photo chop  , so beware any claims or pics :!: IIRC aren't the rev limiter numbers spec'd and posted on some Honda site :?:

But I'd recommend letting your TDI buddies RIP and be happy. You remember their 1/2 "right" don't you :?: You can't have your MPH and keep a high MPG too :!: In that respect diesels do it better. ;) But I'll still beep & wave when passing you by at the pumps. :p And you can still blast past me on the highway.

HTH! :)

Are you the guy on TDI club claiming your Insight blasts all the way up to 110MPH and gets like 54mpg at 110mph??

The insight has a governer set to 110mph. I remeber reading some posts awhile back where someone did this with the wheels off the ground.

actually the Insight has a govenor set at 112mph.

And I said I could and did get 53mpgs at 86mph. Granted that takes the same pedal control. So faster down hills and slower up hills.

I normally had a long commute and 86mph is right were the 5th gear powerband was at.

Well the fastest I've managed before the limiter kicked in, was 193 kph !
That was on the A7 motorway between Frankfurt and Kassel in Germany.
No problem for me here, to try it out without risking my licence.

I bet, without the limiter fitted and with decent tyres it could go 205-215 kph !

I've seen 113mph. First time I hit it in 3rd gear on flat ground, went to 4th and it would not go any faster. To make sure it was indeed a speed limiter I found a nice downhill and brought it to 113 again in 5th . Between the car and the steep grade if it was going to let me go any faster that would have been the place, but it will not let me go any faster.

Same here. The speed was acheived using 3rd or 4th gear depending on the steepness of the road.

Last Friday on the Autobahn I had a little race with an Audi Q7(suv). I guess he was slightly disappointed with it's performance as he couldn't quite keep up with me...

hello rick

Did the brakes force recharge to keep you from going faster? or did the speedometer just not register any faster?

Hey Cakley, just out of curiosity, do you or any of your TDI friends run biodiesel? I was thinking about switching from the Insight to a bio-diesel vehicle, but I'm not a big fan of old Mercedes Benz clunkers and their associated repair bills...

And if anyone does run bio-diesel on the TDI, what kind of mpg are they getting?

Thanks,

:p

I run b20 its 20% biodiesel blend.

b5 might net an increase in mpg
b20 a slight decrease
b100 will net about 10% less mpg

Take notice. VW frowns on using anything more than b5. And VW just loves to deny warranty work. I think they get bonuses based on how much they DONT do.

My Bio Diesel comes from a real bio plant that uses chicken fat! Most bioD is soybean oil.

Yeah, it cut fuel and probably ignition. The electronic limiter is very nice and will let you stay at about that speed and does not violently cut out like some other vehicles I've been in.

The EV1 had a speed limiter too. So does the Fortwo. I heard that the Insight's top speed was set to the maximum speed rating of our LRR tires. The problem with tall geared aerodynamic cars, like the Insight, is that they COULD go really fast given a long straight road. A professional driver should test it on a closed course* without the limiter. The Insight would need modified steering and suspension to be reasonably safe, as I believe that the steering can rapidly degenerate into uncontrolable oscillations at speeds in the 100+ range. I base this on an experience I had, (keeping up with traffic in Montreal), on some hot and rutted asphalt in the 85 MPH range . A cool head, an easing of the throttle, et mon ange gardienne helped. ;)

*so we don't have to

CAKLEY! :D !
Yes, speed limiter kicks in. Just the same, with a turbo'd Insight you can drop her into third at 70 mph and in a few seconds your past 100. There's a guy down here that just bought a VW Golf Diesel to convert it to biodiesel. Says there's a shop in the Tampa area called "Grease Brothers" that does conversions. Glad to hear your still around ;) Jack

2000 models don't have speed limiters, and as such I've been up over 115 MPH before. Not exactly sure how much faster since I prefer to keep my eyes on the road at those speeds then on the speedometer.

Honestly though, who cares? :) If you want to go FAST (and have somewhere you can legally do it) get a real sports car with the handling, brakes and aerodynamic abilities to do so. The Insight is so flighty at those speeds it's crazy to maintain that speed for very long unless you are trying to freak out other drivers (which I have done in the past  ).

Even if the TDI has a higher top speed, the Insight would wreck it on the AutoX course anyway. Anyone can drag race (well, except those people in the Insight VS. TID video ;) ) but turning actually requires skill.

Probably in chasing you he used a months worth of gas for an Insight!

To be a legitimate comparison the turbo Diesel should be compared to a turbo Insight.
