The key to the back hatch will not turn at all. I have used the spare key which is almost brand new and it still will not turn. The trunk will lock and unlock from the power locks, but the hatch lock will not turn with the key. It randomly stopped working on a normal weathered day several months ago and hasn't worked since.

In addition to this, the release button for the hatch has the 'whirring' issue. I have read up on the remedy for this and also read that the trunk can be manually opened by turning the key while pressing the release button, which I cannot do.

Now I cannot get the hatch open to fix the problem at all.

Has anyone encountered the key issue? I have searched quite a bit with no exact results. A general search for stuck door lock returned a wd-40 method or graphite spray.

Please help.

To manually open the trunk with the key, you need to turn the key even more to the right, past where you would normally turn it to open it with the motor.

Edit: Ah, sorry, I totally spaced out. You can't turn the key at all. For some reason my brain only picked up on the whirring trunk latch part of your post.

I once had to remove the whole key barrel, disassemble and clean it. It had gotten badly corroded over a winter when the car was parked outdoors. If it just stopped working then corrosion is probably not your problem though something could have broken in the barrel. I've never heard of that happening though. Does the key turn in the barrel?

The whirring of the electric motor is something else again. Do you have two problems?

No, the key will not turn in the barrel with either the main or spare/new key. I am wondering if maybe a wafer just got stuck from corrosion.

Yes, I have the two problems, but the 'whirring' seems like an easy fix if key would turn. In my case, it seems each is preventing me from fixing the other.

Have you tried graphite or some other lock lube? If it's corrosion something liquid might work better.
