Sexy Futuristic VW Diesel-Electric Gets 261 MPG

The mad scientists at Volkswagen have wheeled out a bullet-shaped diesel-electric plug-in hybrid that gets a stunning 261 mpg. VW claims it is the most fuel-efficient hybrid ever, and it shows what’s possible when you let your engineers run wild.

261mpg is a bit disingenuous. If I recall correctly, they get more like 120mpg on diesel once the plug-in charge runs low - it's a bit like how the Chevy Volt is "100mpge", but it's only ~38mpg on gasoline. And, diesel is around 20% more energy dense than gasoline, so all else being equal it would be a ~100mpg car.

Granted, you can't buy a plug-in Insight that runs on diesel, and it's still really cool.

Just visited on-line. Well stocked with 2CV's! That's one helluva museum. Almost worth a trip to Nashville from where I live on the Pacific. Like, WOW!
