I just bought a used 2001 insight & the same day i got it, we had a torrential downpour. The car was sitting in the driveway & when I got in, I noticed water dripping from under the glovebox. The floor was saturated. I looked up under & there's a little black plastic clip thing that I pulled on. When it popped open, water poured out. It looked like there was some kind of white plastic container or something in there. As a sidebar, the a/c was worked on right before I purchased it. The previous owner claims no knowledge of problem. Help!
Added: After some touring on this sight, the water is definitely leaking out of the bottom clip for the dust & pollen filter. Does anyone know where the water is coming from? It's quite a bit of water, not just a drip.
Thanks to all who responded. Took out glovebox & had a good look. Found drain line under there badly kinked & only part-way through the firewall. Went under the hood & pulled it through. A bunch of trapped water poured out. Problem solved!

Most cars are not water proof especially in downpours as you described. I suggest you get a service manual and go over the weatherstripping areas on the car.

From your description you opened the cabin air filter cover on the AC evaporator case. There is a fresh air intake in the cowl area and if its drain points are clogged then it will overflow into the cabin. The AC normally makes some H2O condensate and requires a drain too. Maybe its clogged.

Sounds like its gonna take someone with water leak hunting experience. The only special tool is a garden hose.

Thanks for the replies. I'll bet it is something to do with the a/c. Where exactly would I find the cowl? Sorry, just another dozy canadian eh?

Hi mbarr - welcome to the board! The cowl would be that area right in front of the bottom of the windshield.

Since the AC was just worked on, the best thing to do is take it back where the work was done, and blame them. If they can prove they didn't do it, then you have to start figuring out your leak. I think IT is right - sounds like a clogged cowl drain.

Base of the windshield. It opens into an enclosed chamber on 3 sides (only open directly to outside air at the top). Its inside this cavity that the cabin intakes fresh air. There are drain openings on each end that empty into the wheel wells.

This is much harder to investigate vs. the much more common AC evap drain clog. Start there first :!:

Please remember that none of this is really a novice task. Still if your up to the learing experience go fo it. But effective help via a newsgroup for the next steps is almost impossible. Sorry.

HTH! :)

I'm having this problem now (in fact I've had this issue before but it never happened in this serious a quantity and it never happened two days in a row).

Any final solution besides what you originally did?

Well I finally tackled this problem. End problem was the kinked hose. I ended up doing way more than I needed to. So simple it was sad.

All you have to do is pull on the hose a bit... a nice stretch rather than a serious tug. Hose is 1/2' black and thin walled, exits out of the firewall and is loosely mounted into a hole that is both circular & pill shaped.

Here are some background pictures for those who want more knowledge. You will have to cut and paste for the one's not totally underlined.
