I got a $2000 u.s. tax credit back in 2002. Is that still available for new Insights?

Think so, but it's probably less than $2000 now. Probably will be eliminated altogether now.

It did deduct down to $1500 this year, but they renewed it back to $2,000. So yes, you should be able to get the $2,000 on a new one.

Also, don't forget to check incentives offered at the state and even the local level. Until last year, my local air pollution control district offered a pure cash rebate for the purchase of a new hybrid. Pretty sweet. They may bring it back next year, I hear.

It was always a deduction and never a credit even in 2000. Have fun, RIck

Well, many of us declared our insights to be "electric cars" and took a 10% * purchase price tax credit. So I got a $2000 refund.

I saved another $1200 since MD has no sales tax on hybrids

No Sales Tax on hybrids?

WOW--I got zinged at 9.1% in sales tax when I bought mine, and this state has a "green" reputation. Hmpf!

We should pool together a list of incentives. Some things like an additional charge of 9.1% are pretty significant when purchasing a car.

Note that the IRS has explicitly stated: "Gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles that are not powered primarily by an electric motor are not qualified electric vehicles." Therefore they are ineligible for the credit that you claimed.

Yeah but that IRS statement was released ~1.5 years after I did it. Plus, I was just following the advice of my tax preparer H&R Block.
