Spoke to my Honda dealer today (my car is going in for service this week) - apparently Honda in the UK have stopped taking orders for new Insights due to demand and there is currently a 7 month waiting list. Hopefully we will some more 2nd hand ones in the next few years!

Doesn't surprise me. There is a once a year production 'run' over the winter months in the Susuka(?) Japanese factory (which also makes the NSX and another model I can't remember). I seem to remember that Honda only sold two new Insights in the UK during 2004 (and only one NSX!) so the '05 production run of UK Insights would have been very limited. The 'seven month waiting list' will be for the '06 production run. :(

Some of us are then hoping that the Honda IMAS (Insight 2) will then be in production later in '06 :D (according to the autotrader.co.uk models coming soon list or even end of '05 according to topgear.com). You are right, there is also a dire shortage of second hand Insights.

Good luck with your service, I hope you get a better quality of service then I do. Don't let them fob you off that there is no 0W-20 Honda oil available; insist on it, your engine will run much better - Part No: H0823199951HE - £7 per 1 litre carton (need about 2.5). Check they don't overfill.

Out of interest, where did you get your Insight?

HTH.

Got my car from Holdcroft Honda in Stoke on Trent - they seem to have handled quite a few Insights in their time. My local Honda garage in Clitheroe have never sold an Insight and have probably never serviced on either.

The car belonged to a Vicar who travelled to London alot - he recently moved to Stoke and now has a Type R! Paid £6325 for the car including 2 years warranty which I thought was pretty good. The car has FSH - even the original purchase receipt for about £10.5k in 2002 - I get the impression that the dealer in Bolton had the car for months and couldnt sell so ended up giving it away.

The car has done 54k and is due its first MOT which is also being done this week. I am getting 80-82 mpg on my commute to Warrington (about 95 miles return)

I checked about the oil and they keep enough in stock for a couple of services plus they have the plugs (3 x Type B) in as well (which I am going to get them to change)

Quoted £163 for the 54k service

I will let you know how I get on.

As an aside I have been doing some work in Derby and last week there was another 02reg silver Insight parked about 6 cars away from mine - got me confused for a while! The only other I have seen recently was a Citrus coloured one parked near where I work in Warrington.

Jack, you get great MPG (the best I have achieved on any tankful in the last three years is about 70MPG). Hope the service & MoT went fine - looks as though you already have a good dialogue with the dealer.

Citrus

Maybe the CVT makes things worse - does it change up at fairly low revs? Mines a manual so I drive almost everywhere in 5th (apart from junctions!). The gear change indicator is really annoying at times - you can be going steady up a hill in say 4th and it starts indicating to change up.

It's just not the CVT, I have had two manual Insights previously. I averaged around 65MPG on the manuals and 60MPG on this car.

I put it down to short urban trips and a heavy right foot! (Can't let other people think Hybrids are slow  )

Honda in Clitheroe

Hi,

I Get my Insight Serviced in Clitheroe too.....

Its one of the lovely Citrus coloured ones, so you'll probably have seen me around.

I tend to do the Burnley to Manchester commute daily... I'm Averaging about 74mpg at the moment.

The only problem I've had with the Garage so far is replacement tyres. Apparently the Bridgestones arn't available anymore, so they tried to fob me off with Pirelli P2000's when the P3000's are the low rolling resistance version. If it would have made much difference I dont know, but I would have thought that they would have put some thought into what to replace the bridgestones with.

I also had a major smash when a heavy old estate car slid into the front of the insight head on...... 6 weeks later I got the car back, and did have a wheel alignment problem which got sorted out when they realised that my tyres were wearing unevenly.... thus the replacements.. :)

Hi Chris

Nice to know there is one other Insight in East Lancs! Greenacre told me they had an Insight that came from Burnley from service. Do you ever get to Warrington (Birchwood Park)? There was a newish Citrus coloured Insight parked there a few months ago. What age is your car?

I assume Greenacre are your nearest Honda dealer? The dealer I bought my car off in Stoke have about 8 Insights that regularly come in for service - I have had one service there and they seem pretty good. Greenacre are offering me discount on parts (20%) if I get my car serviced there next time. Certainly more convenient than Stoke!

Cheers

Hi John,

No mines an X'reg which I suspect makes it 2001 ish. I boughht it from Dixons Honda near Leeds. It had 3000 miles on the clock and sold for £9999. I looked at the prices of them on Autotrader after I bought it and then realised I had a bargain. I've put about 44000 miles on the clock since and have never had any trouble with it apart from the Battery (And the accident!) which seems to cause all sorts of odd symptons when it doesnt hold a charge properly anymore.

I think they stopped making the Citrus Yellow one a few years ago (Shame, I quite like it and its very effective for turning heads..) I've not been to Warrington, although My lodger does sometimes borrow the car so I cant say for sure its never been there.

Greenacre are the closest Honda Dealer to me at the moment, I don't mind taking the car there as I normally have a super breakfast in the Apricot Merangue in clitheroe while I wait.

I didnt think that the plugs needed replacing until about the 100,000 mark, or is that just what the handbook says?

Have you run into the same issue with replacement tyres that I Have? If so what did you replace yours with ?

Cheers

I have a good set of original tyres which have done 13000 miles. These have come off my Citrus Insight which I'm building as a tarmac rally car.
I am in Lancaster so not far from you other N.W owners.
I am looking to import some Insights from Japan but I will have to pay for the very expensive 'model report' which will cost me up to £5000, so i will need to bring in quite a few cars to make it worthwhile. We will also look at setting up a specialist parts/service operation and develop some technical expertise.

Hi Paul,

How much do you want for the tyres? I suspect a couple of mine are wearing thin..

Also, what else are you going to do to your old Citrus Insight to turn it into a tarmac rally car?

Cheers

Iam building the car for Formula 1000 which is a NW based tarmac championship. Mechanical mods are limited to induction and exhaust and I am looking at ways to trick the ecu to allow slightly richer fueling and a higher rev limit, but I don't want to ruin the cars eco credentials.
It is now at Safety Devices having a roll cage made and then goes to AVO to have some competition suspension made.
Obviously I am looking to shed as much weight as possible so out will go air con, electric windows airbags etc etc.

The main competition in the championship are Micras, Polos and 106's with the odd Mini and Starlet etc thrown in. We think the Insight may have an edge on these cars but some of the leading cars are very quick for 1 litres.

I have 3 excellent original tyres (one was damaged when the car was pranged before I bought it). I'll take £25 each for them if that is a fair price.

We are looking into the import situation at the moment and when we take the plunge we will post the stock on this forum.
If anyone has any particular requests let me know.

cheers,

Paul

I may be interested in an import - Quantum Grey or White, manual.

Spare a thought for us down under. Insight has been witdrawn from the new car market since 1994. There are definitely no new Insights available here. Unfortunately it does not seem as if Australians care - despite the rapid decline in local oil production with a corresponding increase in imports. There have been no used Insights advertised for about 2 months - perhaps those who own them have wisely decided to hang on to their cars.
