You need to go to the dealer and have them do a oil consumption test.

Being down a qt at 30% would mean you been about 7-8 thousand miles since your last oil change. Do you know if the engine was filled at the last oil change?

Typically the dip stick measures 1 qt. So if its just touching the bottom of the dip stick you are a qt low. You need at least a qt to fill the passages in the engine and most of it was likely still in there if you just stopped the engine to check it.

Yes, the later gen 2s have oil consumption issues, but yours sounds minor considering the miles on the car and the last oil change.

atikovi, nope. Never occurred to me. Since I do not burn oil or leak it I dont bother monitoring it.

tathiela, so when your oil minder says you are 30% before an oil change is required you have traveled only 5 thousand miles?

Be nice guys. :)

Do you own a BMW? Better carry a case of oil in your trunk - Torque News

"Audi, BMW and Subaru all say it’s normal

Audi, BMW and Subaru all maintain that oil consumption is a normal part of the these engine’s operation and that this is normal. Subaru says a quart burned every 1,000 to 1,200 miles is acceptable. Certain Audi and BMW cars’ standards state that a quart burned every 600 to 700 miles is within acceptable consumption ranges.
For a new vehicle, these are excessive amounts and are unacceptable for any vehicle. Consumer Reports says, “It’s normal for cars to burn a little oil as they age toward 100,000 miles and beyond. We believe that any engine that burns oil between changes should be repaired under the powertrain warranty. Automakers often shield themselves in the fine print of their owners’ manuals.”

I use to check the fluid before a long trip or commute. Since the insight seems to not use or leak anything Ive slacked off. I do check my tire psi monthly.

Now my other 2 cars I do check stuff and hook the battery up to a charger the night before I want to drive it to ensure its topped off. I dont drive either that much.
