Today I went to the Connecticut International Car Show at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, CT. It's going on this weekend. Tomorrow on Sunday is the last day from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Anyways, I had the opportunity of seeing the 2012 Honda Insight EX in the Honda section and I took pictures of the car.

What is clearly different than the 2010 Honda Insight (which I have) is that it has a better interior with cloth and leatherette seats, silver edged vents and better quality dashboard plastic. Outside the car, I noticed that the car had BridgeStone Ecopia 185/60 R15 tires, instead of the Dunlop tires, which I wish I can replace with my own car. The grill and the back of the car looks different and the car was equipped with a rear view camera.

I'm somewhat dismayed that they could only improve the highway gas mileage by one mile and the city mpg doesn't change at all. The trunk had noticeably less room, probably because they gave a little legroom to the rear seating area. There were also little things that I noticed that were different than my car like the navigation system (buttons and FM traffic feature) and a compartment in the center console, next to the drink holders that you can store small stuff like loose change. Also, the steering wheel and shifter are wrapped in leather, a feature I liked.

If you are thinking about buying a brand new Insight, I would get the 2012 model. Unless you can get a better deal for a 2011, which I think might be a better option.

I got a question about the headlamp assemblies.

The 2012 uses some sort of blue tint film. Is the blue chrome on the projector portion of the headlamp assemblies gone in its place?

I don't know... I guess I really didn't really notice it. I took a picture of the front of the car and come to think of it, it does look somewhat different.

going from a 175/65/15 to 185/60/15 isn't that big a tire upgrade - the amount of tread is only about an extra .4 inch and 8 extra revs over a mile ... ultimately it will come down to tire selection, compound, etc. ... and obviously, since the '12 insight realized an extra 1mpg, with quite modest changes all around, bigger tires don't neccesarily equate with LOWER mpgs

These have been at the car dealers her in LA for a couple of weeks.

I have to say, they look much more substantial than my 2010. They look wider from the back because the taillights are a bit different and that chrome strip across the tailgate. Oh, btw, that same chrome strip design showed up on the plug-in Prius in late 2010. My neighbor had a plug-in Prius in his driveway. I heard he works for Toyota.

Great you got to see it in person! Your pictures are pretty awful though  Blurry... Here's a great video on it.
Not a HUGE amount of changes.. I do like the newer seats though. The reviewer just doesn't like CVT's he complains about it a lot...

I got a brief glimpse of a 2012 yesterday at dusk... couldn't see it too well, as the sun had gone down behind the horizon. It was easy to tell it was a '12, as the chrome between the tail lights gave it away. I tried to get up even with the guy at a stop light to see how he liked it, but he was turning to the right and didn't even notice his cars older sister. ;)

We actually got our 2012 Insight a week ago, our first hybrid, and we love it. First tank was 48 mpg, and close to 500 miles on the tank. I test drove a 2010 Insight and Prius, but like the 2012 Insight much better than the 2010 Insight. They were just too proud of the Prius price wise, and the Insight is much better looking.

Welcome to the forum, amjackson! You're not anywhere in the greater Jacksonville, FL area are you? Cannot imagine there are too many of the '12's in peoples hands yet. The car sort of teaches you how to drive it, so if you're already getting 48mpg on a new engine you'll be doing even better later.:)

Actually in Fayetteville NC. We are honda people, I have a 10 v6 6 speed accord and my wife had a crosstour. Seen the insight being unloaded from the truck and it was the first white one I had seen. So we have already doubled our mileage on the crosstour. She calls it a minitour

with the exception of the revised cup holder I'm underwhelmed ... no matter what i put in there i get a buzz/vibration ... the reviewer seemed unaware that ALL insights are made in japan - duh!?

If I had that model, I would paint the chrome stuff to match the color of the car. Yummm, red bazels around the air vents.... :D

I wonder what is going on in the turn signal/fog lamp area. Are fog lamps standard like on the CRZ? Are the turn signals LED for the front?

Looks like they made mostly cosmetic changes.

According to what I read, the 1 MPG difference is a combination of being 2% more aerodynamic(in the under body area); as well as reducing friction in ICE and CVT. I made a 2 MPG combined gain with my 10 Insight; just by removing my front license plate bracket and using Amsoil. Needless to say, a 1 MPG gain while worth mentioning, is not that impressive.

The best improvement IMO, are the leather like seats.(which you can buy aftermarket) and the increased Rear window visibility. The increased rear seat headroom is something like .6 of an inch while providing a few more inches in rear leg room.(sacrificing trunk space) The overall dimensions are the same as the 10-11 models.

I also read that they use more/better insulation in the New 12 model to reduce road noise.

Honda's press release claims that the 2012 Insight has greater headroom and leg room for the back seat. But when I did a specifications comparison between the 2012 and 2011 models, this is what Honda's site said:

2012 vs. 2011
headroom: 36.4 vs. 35.9
legroom: 33.0 vs. 33.5

Do you think this is a typo or has to do with how measurements are taken? Has anyone sat in the back of a 2012 and can give a 1st person impression of rear seat head and leg room?

I'm 6'-1" and I sat in the rear seat of a 2012 and I thought it felt bigger than the .5 inches.

But.... my windows are tinted and this 2012 was not. That may be why it felt more open than my car.

Not sure why the OP said the 2012 rear cargo area was "noticeably smaller" than the 2010. They're identical. Honda did two things to get the rear seat room:

1. They scooped out the rear sear cushions so you sink further in which sits you lower (more head room) and a half inch further back (leg room)

2. They raised the headliner in the rear (more headroom)

What I noticed most on my test drive:

1. New gauges are classier
2. View out back window is better with thinner interior hatch/wiper trim
3. MUCH quieter ride on the highway

great info, as reducing trunk space doesnt seem as easy as a mild refresh is concerned.

whatever those lights on the front are though, they are l.e.d.'s. they remind me of the lights mugen threw on their edition of the crz.

i'm digging the new seats. i personally never found the '10 to be a 'loud' car, but our other honda is a 2010 fit. my mom has a base 2011 and it alone feels more substantial and smooth than our '10 ex.

the best thing honda did was probably the interior upgrade...i wish they would have made the dash nicer, but given current honda dash material, expecting a VW-golfesque soft touch is too much to ask, especially for a refresh. (and especially if the civic is rocking what i feel to be an even cheaper feeling dash)

as long as the hard plastic holds up and stays solid like our '10, i'm good though. the places where your hands actually spend a lot of time have been massively improved.

oh and you can get it in milano red WITH a black interior. that alone makes me want a 2012 ;)

it would have been nice if they could have shoved the Cr-z's bigger engine in here with the new li-ion batteries form the CHB..., up mileage a bit more AND have some more (needed) hp and torque? yes please. dont think they'd have any issues fitting it in either.
