Hello! First post. This forum is incredible.
I have a California CVT 03 insight that I recently bought and have been enjoying tinkering with! My current issue is regarding the ABS throwing up a permanent 15-01 code. Unfortunately I’m in the middle of a move and all my tools were put away so further troubleshooting will need to wait.. But I think I collected enough info to figure something out.

My question is: why am I getting a permanent ABS code?

Used to working on Pre-Obd 2 vehicles without ABS. If anything seems painfully obvious that’s why!

Here are my observations:
-Arent permanent ABS codes supposed to exist only on 2010+ vehicles?
-Both rear ABS sensors were swapped with known good ones
-Followed troubleshooting tree for ABS sensor. Ohms checked good at the sensor and up front. Values were well within but I need to do this again. Done hastily late one night 🤷‍♂️
-Vin reads as an 06 Dodge Ram when I connect my scan tool. Does that mean anything here? Any way to fix that?
-Code pops for the rear right abs sensor and my code reader live date shows 0 mph for that wheel when moving. No codes pop for the rear left sensor but code reader also shows 0 mph for that wheel as well. Both front wheel speed sensors measure speed fine with no error codes.
-Abs worked when I first got the car but would engage early and shutter coming to stops. I suspect the previous owners were pulling fuses to keep lights off and everything functioning (is there anything I can pull to reset this permanent code? Pulling the clearly marked ABS fuse (or two maybe?) in the engine bay don’t reset anything. Just need to pass an inspection so figuring out how to make the ABS light work properly for maybe 30 minutes would be acceptable. Was hoping a
-Both sets of ABS sensors were cleaned and inspected. Abs rings on both hubs were cleaned and don’t seem to have any issues.
-Rear right shock was blown. I figured this shook the old sensor to death. Rear right wheel was looking pretty sad before I changed the tires and shock. Have not done alignment
-Followed wires as best as possible from abs module to rear abs sensors. All seemed well but are there any places I could check? I suspect rats or mice had made a home just rear of the front right wheel well at some point. No other wire or chewing damage has been found in that area or any others (at least yet)

Thank you!

Have you downloaded the full service manual from this site?
I don't have a the link handy but it is on here.
This will give you the pinouts for the abs connector on the module under the hood.
There is a whole section on the ABS system.

Your scan tool probably cannot talk to the Insight ABS module properly.
You need a cheap HDS clone or my OBDIIC&C to do that.

I would say you likely have a bad sensor or wiring at rear.
So you need to check wiring with a meter from front to back and ensure no shorts to power or ground or any open wires.

You could temporarily runs wires from front to back to connect the sensor directly to the ABS module.
You cannot clear the fault light if you haven't fixed the fault.

Once you do fix it then the fault light will go off after a couple of drive cycles and IIRC there may be a procedure in the manual to reset it without an HDS or one of my OBDIIC&C modules.

Hello! Thank you both for your responses. I was away and unable to work on the insight for awhile. Lengthy type up incoming:

finally back working on it. Here’s what I’ve done: I’ve gone through the entire harness and followed the two Rear right abs power and ground wires from the abs module all the way to the sensor verifying no breaks in either. That was thrilling. Going back to check connection at the connector on the passenger floorboard here in a bit. Connector for the sensor as well.

I was able to get my hands on a brand new NTK sensor. Seems the oem ones are out of stock on hondapartsnow. Still getting the light after doing the brake pedal reset and a few drive cycles though.

Blink code and my obd2 scanner still say error 15. both rear sensors are showing 0 speed even though the front sensors are showing correct speed on my obd2 scanner. I’ve got a pretty decent innova 5160rs that seems to communicate that wheel speed accurately in live time. Retepsnikrep, I’d be interested in one of your OBDIIC&C modules if all works out! Gotta get this thing through all the California registration hoops first 🙃

Willie that does help thank you. I was able to collect some files awhile ago but they were on a computer in storage.

I have followed the troubleshooting steps with no voltage from pin 15 (rrw +) to body ground, no continuity from pin 15 to body ground, but getting a 1700 ohm reading between pins 15 and 6 (rrw -) and no loose pins at the connector and the module pins look fine. FRW showed 1390, FLW showed 1420, and RLW showed 1670.

even though there are no faults with the rear left wheel why am I not showing any speed at the rear wheels but showing accurate speed at the front wheels?

anyone have a spare abs modulator control unit? Looks to me to be the culprit in this case. Any ideas otherwise?

thanks

If the ABS sensors and wiring are 100% ok it must be the abs unit.
They are very reliable in the insight G1 so you will just have to replace it from a wrecker.
