I've got a 2000 Insight. The battery was replaced in 2006 by the dealer after I received a recall notice. It had 86,000 miles at the time. My IMA light just came on (at 152,000 miles) and the dealer says that it needs another new battery but it isn't covered under warranty. He also says that the battery they put in 4 years ago was "reconditioned" not new, and that all batteries come that way. They want to charge me $3600 to replace the battery. Do I have any recourse? Is the dealer being honest? Please help!

Since it is a year 2000 Insight, perhaps the 10 year portion of the warranty expired and not the extended mileage portion.

In either case, you are not so far away from the warranty expiration so I would call Honda and ask for a "good will" extendsion. There is a chance that it could be covered or they will pay something like half the cost.....It has been done before.....Just be calm, polite and give them the facts.

If you do a search, you will find the phone number in this forum somewhere.

I think the 2000 was only extended to 150000K and it may be past 10 years from date of first registration. Goodwill is a possibility but it would probably be less expensive and less hassle to go with Ron Hansen's Hybrid Battery Repair.

edit: correction, they won't cover it for 150 million miles.

2000 Insights are covered to 150,000 miles. 2002+ are covered to 157,500 because of a speedometer discrepancy lawsuit.

All the warranty and replacement batteries are "remanufactured". It's very likely that most if not all of the cells are new or NOS, but the housings and electronics are almost certainly recycled.

Your recourse right now is to appeal to them for "goodwill". Honda custimarily grants a 50% discount to those within 5% of the ending mileage of their warranty to those that complain loud enough and long enough. It will have to be referred to the "regional rep", etc. It will take a few days, but hopefully they'll pay half of the $3000 bill. If you can get a replacement for $1500 you should take it. If they want more than $2000, then call me.

All of this is out the window if your car is more than 10 years old.
