My rear view mirror shakes bad enough to give me dizziness when I look at it.
Does anyone observe the same problem?

I purchased a 2002 Insight about a month ago and have noticed the same looseness. I removed the mirror and tried re-installing it, tightening the phillips head screw, but it still rattles.

Searching the forums for 20 minutes turned up a bunch of threads that didn't seem relevant, so I'd be appreciative of any pointers on how others may have fixed a loose center (inside) rear view.

Mine doesn't rattle. If it did, I'd use basic troubleshooting and repair methods. The rattle is vibration from pieces that are supposed to be tight, but are loose for some reason.

First determine where the rattle is coming from. There are two ball joints and the mount. And there is some linkage inside the mirror. If you don't know where the rattle is coming from, touch the ball joints, the mount, and the day/night adjuster and see what makes the rattle stop.

If the rattle is at the base and mount and the screw doesn't tighten it, it was probably overtightend at some point and the base is bent. You might try to bend it back out or you might want to try to use some tape as shims for a tighter fit. Remember, you want a nice snug fit without having to use the screw. Then use the screw to hold it secure to the base.

I haven't tried using a shim, which is an interesting idea.

It seems the screw that is supposed to tighten the mount isn't working properly, for reasons than aren't readily apparent (to me anyway :)). It's possible the bracket was overtightened at some point and that stressed the threads at the exact point where the screw needs to be tightest.

One thing is for sure: A rattling and vibrating rear view mirror is distracting!
