P1600 and P1601. IMA light and check engine light. No regen

If this is already answered in another thread, I'd appreciate some help finding it, but I've looked and haven't seen someone with the same problem yet. I find it hard to believe this is unique to me, however. Here's the problem:

Bought a 2000 manual Insight about 2 months ago. IMA was generally fine. Wouldn't often be over 80% charged though.
About a month ago, the IMA battery started to behave erratically - randomly dropping charge while I was driving all the way down to about two or three bars in only 30 seconds, then charging for maybe the next 10 minutes of driving until going all the way up to full in only 30 seconds again. The battery would then behave normally for another week or so until it did this again. This happened for about a month.
Then about two weeks ago the IMA light came on. Regen, assist, and auto stop were still functioning, so I figured whatever the problem was wasn't serious (yet). Then about a week later the check engine light came on while driving, and during that same drive, regen, assist, and auto stop stopped working. IMA bar showed full charge and didn't really change.
I then pulled the codes and got P1600 and P1601. No other codes (seems like it's good I avoided some other ones like 1447 and 1449?). The car still runs, and I'm still getting around the mileage I was before (about 60.5 mpg), but I'm obviously concerned something bad happened and may get worse, and it's not as efficient.
The guy I bought the car from gave me a grid charger. I haven't been using it as I don't have the means (I live in the city and park on the street), but I called him and asked his advice (he posts here and knows a lot about Insights). He suggested I charge it 24 hours with the grid charger, discharge for 12 hours down to <1 volt, then full charge again for 24 hours (and take out the pink fuse to reset the IMA). Not sure if that'll solve the problem, but I'm in the midst of charging it right now (I borrowed a car from a friend and am charging mine in his garage). Lastly, the last time I drove it (when taking it to my friend's), when I started the car, the previously "full" IMA bar lights were empty or had 1 bar (can't remember).
I have about 20 questions, but I'll try to keep them simple for now. I'm not an expert on Insights, so keep that in mind in responses please (lots of acronyms and abbreviations only make for more questions):
Does a thread exist on this already?
Has anyone run into this and found a simple and cheap solution?
What do the 1600 1601 codes mean?
Will the charge/discharge/charge cycle fix any of these problems? If so, which problems, and for how long?

I was thinking that the '1600' is just a general code that says there's an IMA problem, without any specificity. But here's the General Description from the troubleshooting manual, can't say I understand it:

"General Description
This DTC is used to determine if a malfunction is on the engine side or the IMA side when checking with the HDS. When device on the IMA side malfunctions, the motor control module (MCM) signals the engine control module (ECM) to turn the MIL. If the ECM receives a signal from the MCM to turn on the MIL, the MIL is turned on and a DTC is stored."


Your description of your symptoms (except the lack of a 1447 or 1449 code) sounds like boiler plate 'pack unbalanced, getting old, deteriorating' stuff. I don't really have any tried and true, one-size-fits-all strategy. I'm sure someone else does though... You might want to just start with a grid charge session and reset the computer by pulling the under dash number 18 fuse... If it were me I'd probably check voltages at the voltage taps (10 taps, one tap per 2 stick pair) and see if any taps stand out, most likely low voltage, and then decide what to do. For example, if one tap's voltage were 0.2V or more lower than the others (S. Keith's value), I'd probably open the pack and find replacements for those sticks before I did anything else.

But in any event, grid charge, reset. Try it out. Maybe start thinking about deep discharging followed by another grid charge session...

Update-that's-not-really-an-update: I do have ONE bar on the SOC (thought there was none). Also, I'm almost done with my charge/discharge/charge cycle, so tomorrow may give me some answers.

Still, in case that doesn't solve the problem, can you help clarify some things? Sorry in advance for the all the clarifying questions, but I'm not well-versed in all this stuff.
Which fuses would I need to check?
Where would I find these fuses?
And lastly, what would I be checking them for?

If the soc gauge really is blank, and you have no ima codes, only ecm ones, then mudder is prob on right track with lack of 12v power to MCM/IMA.

Check all ima 12v side fuses first and report back..

Engine Bay Fuse 16 powers a TON of things, including the MCM, but also the Gauge Assembly, cabin lights, tail lights, radio, etc. Glad you figured it out, but were none of those other subsystems working, too? In other words, can you clarify whether Engine Bay Fuse 16 was burned out? Or was it some other fuse? Engine Bay Fuse 16 would certainly cause MCM problems, but you would have had many other problems, too (e.g. none of your interior lights or tail lights would work).

You are correct. I was trying to think of a way to say it but nothing seemed to make sense. I did not buy a new one. Simply pulled it out and put it back in. Should have just said that.

Thanks for the help, everyone. For now, it seems I've solved the problem, which appears to just have been a slowly dying battery pack in need of some loving.
