Whatever makes you think that? I have my windows open whenever the weather is halfway suitable.

 

I open my windows max 1" at various times as I never use the air con!

I think that it is a small guide to insure the glass goes back in the track when you close the window all of the way. The rear portion of the window does not need one because it is always in the track.

joecvt you got it exactly but the reason it had to be put there in the first place is down to high speed aero problems.
This is a low pressure area from the outside as the air comes around and off the windshield.At high max speeds this pulls a partially open window out slightly and prevents it from hitting the grove to seat home.
The added device guides the glass home.
