Indiana will not register a salvage vehicle

Is anyone else having this problem? Lady at the BMV said some other states will not register a salvage titled vehicle. Basically in Indiana I have to fill out a bunch of forms, have a cop inspect the car to make sure its road worthy, have them sign the forms and then send the forms back to BMV to get a "Rebuilt" title. I just picked up a gem of car for cheap: 2005 Dark Blue CVT with 130k with a strong battery, great tranny and runs great. Other than its got about 100 dings due to hail damage. Gonna get a rebuilt title and have some "cosmetic contouring" done and keep her and add Rosta cruise control for trips.

In MD you also have to show receipts for repair parts to prove it was not rebuilt with stolen bits. (A way to curb the old chop shop businesses).

Thats my understanding how it works and its pretty routine. Why the seller of the vehicle will not do it makes me worry it did not pass and needs mo work.

I know many people who go to buy a car on craigs list and the seller does not disclose this til the very end of the deal that it has a salvage title and "they" need to get it inspected and certified by the DMV.

Lady at the BMV says if the only problem is hail damage, no work needs to be done. As long as it passes a cops visual inspection and he signs the form they will issue a rebuilt title. I've driven the car appx 50 mi and it has no dash lights and purrs like my mistress.

Sorry, Dash works fine with no error lights on the dash.

I saw a post a bit ago about one in a Copart auction that matches your description. Was this one that one? If so, how much did you end up paying and how difficult is Copart to deal with?

Simply put.........Contact your local DMV for rules and regulations about Salvage Title/Registration, different states will vary.

Assuming this was directed at me. I did buy a dark blue CVT with 130k mi out of SC a couple weeks ago and it was written off by the insurance company due to hail damage and someone removed cat #2. Just put a straight pipe in place of cat #2 and having the hail damage removed as we speak. Can't say what I paid but the copart fees and my broker fees (I'm not a dealer so I rent a broker) were literally 50% of my buy price. Unless its a steal, I'm never and I mean never, going to buy from copart again. This car was the best Copart car I've bought but all the others were real bow wows.

Planning on keeping this car as its one of the few rust free cars I have and its value is diminished due to getting a 'rebuilt' title that I have not obtained yet.

Say what?
I'm very happy with my purchase. This car was written off for dead and will look great in one week and will be around for the next 30 years. What you smoking?
Where's the ignore button?

Each state has their own rules about how to get a salvage vehicle back onto the road.
Vehicles can be salvaged for all kinds of reasons, so each has its own process.

Once you figure out your own states rules/process, the next hurdle may be to get your insurance company to cover it.

Best of luck and feel free to share what you have learned in order to help others save time.

Colorado will. Bought a salvage Bronco in Wyoming, registered it in Colorado.
