Ground Control now offers a coilover kit for gen 1 insights everyday for $399!!
It is nice to see that 5 years after Honda ceased production of the original insight there is finally an aftermarket suspension part offered.

Just spoke to Chris at Ground Control (530) 677-8600 at 1:00pm Pacific Time, on July 27, 2011. He'll have tech guy call me back regarding furnishing me with 4 Konis that would work with the coil over springs they now offer. He confirming whether his coil overs are for Gen 1 or Gen 2, within the hour. Let me know if you find out anything as well and if you have or can get the diagrams for front and rear shocks.

Thanks, Henri

If anyone could find a "reliable" spring manufacturer or suspension rebuilder, take an old spring to them and they could tell you the spring rate.
All you need is a press with a PSI gauge and the knowledge (wire gauge spec.) and a spare spring.

The daewoo matiz rear spring swap works really well on the Insight Mk1 all three of my manual cars have matiz rear springs. I may swap the fronts for CVT springs as they are higher rated so will ride a little higher.

Can you recommend a supplier? Did you also change the bump stops?

Ive heard the front end you can swap with a Civic (EP shape) although you would want custom spring rates and would gain some weight.

Air lift suspension alternative

Why not use cheap easy to install air bags mounted within the existing rear coil springs? Ride height is easy to change since you do not have to get under the car to make the adjustment as with coil-over springs and ride quality generally is improved. With custom made steel springs, you may have to learn to live with a not totally satisfactory result or settle for some cut and try.

bummed...

Well, I have been in contact with Progress Auto on some help to see if they could make us Gen 1 Insight guys a nice true coilover suspension but alas the answer was no.

Due to extremely low demand and a high backlog, they cannot do it for an affordable price.

I am still asking around here in SoCal from some local tuners who have some good contacts at KYB, AGX, Ground Control, and hopefully I get some positive feedback.:-?

GC confirmed...

I just got off the phone with GC customer service and they assured me that the Insight lowering springs (sleeves) will fit all years of the Insight. Looks like they are designed to be used with the OEM shocks and are about 20% or so stiffer than OEM springs.

I didn't get the exact specs since the customer service rep didn't have it handy at the time. Looks like they are in-stock and ready to ship!

Hopefully by next month I will have the kit and install it. I'll be sure to do a DIY with plenty of pics!:D

ksport

hey guys whats up. came across this and wanted to give you guys some info. i am working with ksport and they are making a coilover set up for the insight. it will be the coilovers and shocks!! so for all those that need new shocks and want something better than oem this is for you. they are designing them from the ground up so they are currently in development. im told the fronts are pretty much done and there just working on the rear. i do not work for ksport but i am working with them to produce this kit. i am doing a k20 type r swap into an insight for one of my customers and i talked to ksport about a custom coilover setup and they were intrested and now there doing a production run of them. so ill be in touch with the forum to let you guys know any updates as i get them. any questions just pm me and ill help in anyway i can. like i said i do not work for ksport, but i can get answers if i dont know them off hand. im just a honda nut and i help everyone and anyone i can!:D

Wow, that is some great news! I just hope these turn out to be affordable unlike the quotes I got from Tein and Progress.

Please keep us informed if you can.

The ksport kit is nonexistent, talked to a rep and they discontinued it. Just ordered my ground control kit and asked the rep how many they've sold and so far a grand total of three. Anyhow, should have them next week and my new wheels/ tires as well so I'm looking forward to having one of the only slammed insights out there.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not a suspension guy. What advantages does this Ground Control kit offer?

#28 ·
Ability to adjust the ride height of the car, and slightly stiffer springs instead of the mushy Honda oem. Mostly a cosmetic upgrade but there are probably aero advantages to lowering the car. I'm looking forward to having a more responsive ride as well, won't have to slow down for corners anymore, that should preserve momentum and equal greater mpgs as well ;).

So you would be able to adjust the ride height both above and below stock? Hmm.. Cool.

It would be pretty cool to lower it the maximum you could while cruising on the highway, and raise the height when you're say, camping.

Yes, I've taken my Insight off roading.. in a sense. Not really recommended....

442k? Wow, i thought mine was getting up there at ~303k. heh.

Im interested in where this goes, but without spring rate numbers and price point being in the same spot it's all pretty vague info. And that doesnt even mention the problem of how to quantify the difference in the dampers.

Keep it updated, though. :)

No word yet...

Currently I have not received word on the new GC kits. I emailed them 2 weeks ago regarding them and have not gotten a response back yet. Apparently they were having some shortage issues on the parts for our Insight kits.

I did not purchase the custom Koni shocks due to some funding issues and I regret it. They were put up for sale here on this site and were sold in 1 day.

I still plan on getting the new GC sleeve coilover kit once all the parts have been manufactured.
